Pop Up Pickle! #MySundayPhoto

A pop up restaurant? In our little town? Really?! Well, there’s only one way to find out what that’s all about isn’t there? Go and give it a try!

The Pickle Shack have actually hosted the Honiton Grub Club in one of our local halls a total of four times now. This is the first time I, and my friend Mary, have been to try it. The concept is simple. They hire the hall, come along with their chef Josh McDonald-Johnson who has worked for several 2 Michelin starred chefs. You pre-book and pay, turn up, bring a bottle or two and have an amazing meal. They clear up, move out and it’s almost as if it was all in your imagination.

As you can see from the above menu, we had a wonderful feast all made from locally sourced ingredients, the details of which were supplied to us too and made for interesting reading.

Rather than whitter on about how beautiful the food looked and tasted, here are a couple more photos.

IMG_2091If you should ever hear of the Pickle Shack, if they pop up in your locality or they cater an event near to you, I most definitely recommend going along. Mary and I have said that we’ll be keeping an eye out for the next time they’re in town so we can book our places straight away.

Ho, Ho, Ho! #MySundayPhoto

Ever since I can remember I’ve wanted to live in North Wales. We spent nearly every holiday we had there when we were little. Living in the Midlands it was only a hop, skip and jump over to the most glorious beaches and amazing mountainous scenery. Since Kev and I have been together (25 years this September – gulp!) we’ve made the rather trickier journey from East Devon up to North Wales on a regular basis. This has continued since we’ve had Holly – her first time up Snowdon was before she was even born! Hopefully she has some lovely memories of our family holidays up there too.

I regularly look at houses for sale in North Wales and, while I was having one of these yearning sessions the other evening, Kev threw in a curve ball by saying he’d quite like to live in North Devon!  We pop up there occasionally to the beach at Saunton Sands, which is actually very North Wales like, but we haven’t really explored the coast there in much more detail. Although North Devon is only some 50 miles away from where we live, the journey up there seems to take forever. However, as Kev had some time off work this week I suggested that we go and look at, although we knew absolutely nothing about it, Westward Ho! If you’ve never been, you should go! It’s absolutely gorgeous. Whereas Saunton is a lovely long beach with just a cafe and car park, Westward Ho! has a lovely town, amazing houses and fantastic beach to explore. I think we both fell a little in love with it. Is this the end, finally, of the North Wales dream?! Hmmm, wouldn’t bet on it!

An Evening Stroll in Dawlish #MySundayPhoto

IMG_1530We’re so lucky in this part of the country, particularly now that the clocks have changed and the evenings stay light for so much longer. We’re only a short car journey from a lovely evening walk. It had been ages since we’d been to Dawlish Warren or Dawlish and our main objective on this particular evening was actually to get food. I’d Googled “best places to get fish and chips in Devon” and had come up with a result which showed a mobile Street Kitchen called La Cantina. On further investigation it turned out that they now had a static site in Dawlish Warren. Looking at the menu and photos on Facebook, we decided to give it a go and weren’t disappointed! After a lush burger we decided a walk around the coast was in order.

After the devastation to the sea wall and railway line in Dawlish in February 2014, an ongoing rebuild has been taking place. It was interesting to see the site storing equipment still being used to repair and maintain the wall at the far end of Dawlish Warren and on the beach at Dawlish. Part of the wall is still closed to the public closer to Dawlish as the work to repair it continutes. None of this stops it being a lovely walk with wonderful views though, so if you’re in the area do stop off and you could definitely do worse than calling at La Cantina for some of their wonderful “real chips”!

A New Job! #MySundayPhoto

IMG_1354My baby has her first job proper paid job!!!!! We spotted this last Saturday as she was on her way to her Honiton Lace making class. She popped in for an application form, filled it in and took it back straight after her lace class (thanks Annabel!). She had a phone call less than an hour later, as we were driving into Exeter for our prom dress shopping day, inviting her for an interview on Wednesday just gone. It was a working interview, after which she was told that they’d make a decision between her and the other applicants by the end of the following day.

I had a phone call from an ecstatic daughter the following lunch time – they’d called her on her mobile at school to tell her the job was hers! She starts next Saturday…..very early!! Fingers crossed!

Well done baby! Very proud of you x
